Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of increasing the ranking of a webpage through the natural or organic processes of the search provider. Simply, SEO is the art of creating a webpage that self encourages search engines like Google to place the page’s link higher during searches. The art of this process is the fact that no matter what a programer or developer claims they can not guarantee top placement. The reason for this is that the search engine algorithms are ever changing and no one but the engineers at Google or Yahoo! or Bing know the exact methods behind the search engine’s madness. Thus, the best that a web designer can do is optimize the webpage to best fit the current search engine trends. This leaves the entire process of search engine optimization up to what is currently being practiced and how the creator thinks the webpage in question can best be optimized. So in short, its an art, not a science and thus there is no way to guarantee that #1 position in the Google search.
Knowing that there is never a guaranteed method to reach the number one position on a Google search or similar search it is very possible to get the first page. This is where SEO really comes in. If the current practices are managed correctly and the web designer understands the habits of the intended users then achieving the #1 page in the search is extremely possible. The key is to know what intended users will search for. Knowing and targeting these key words on the web page and optimizing the page through algorithm enhancing practices allows the web designer to successfully create a web pages that is optimized for the search engines. Again though this leaves the entire practice of SEO as an art because of the designers required act of predicting the search habits of the end user.
